A breve arriverà un antidoto universale contro il loro veleno. I ricercatori dello Scripps Research Institute, l’istituto di ricerca biomedica con sede in California, hanno sviluppato un anticorpo che è in grado di bloccare gli effetti delle tossine letali presenti nei veleni di un'ampia varietà di serpenti, tra cui il famoso mamba nero, considerato il rettile più pericoloso al mondo, e il cobra reale.Lo studio sugli anticorpi Testato nei topi, li ha protetti non solo dalla morte ma anche dalla paralisi, come riportato nello studio pubblicato sulla rivista Science Translational Medicine. L’anticorpo non funziona, però, contro il veleno delle vipere: per mettere a punto un antidoto universale, dunque, servirà un cocktail composto da diversi anticorpi.L’ispirazione dai vaccini contro il virus dell’HivPiù di 100mila persone all’anno, soprattutto in Asia e Africa, muoiono a causa del veleno di un serpente, e gli antidoti attualmente a disposizione funzionano generalmente solo per una singola specie. I ricercatori coordinati da Joseph Jardine hanno tratto ispirazione da loro precedenti studi effettuati sui vaccini contro il virus dell’Hiv: si sono infatti resi conto che, come l’Hiv, anche le tossine dei serpenti hanno regioni conservate che non possono mutare da una specie all’altra, e che quindi costituiscono gli obiettivi ideali per un anticorpo mirato.La "tossina a tre dita"Confrontando le proteine contenute nei veleni di una grande varietà di serpenti, gli autori dello studio ne hanno identificata una chiamata “tossina a tre dita”, o 3FTx, che contiene porzioni molto simili tra le diverse specie. Trovato un buon candidato, i ricercatori sono andati a caccia di anticorpi umani capaci di legarvisi tra oltre 50 miliardi di possibilità. Restringendo la ricerca a circa 3.800 molecole, ne hanno trovate 30 che riconoscono più di una versione di 3FTx e, tra queste, una in particolare, chiamata 95Mat5, spicca per la sua capacità di legarsi molto bene a tutte quelle testate.
